Standard FAQ's

What sort of problems can counselling/therapy help with?

Talking therapy can be useful for working through many issues that you are facing within your life. People sometimes come to counselling because they feel stuck, or just can’t understand their emotions, both individually and also within their relationships. Counselling can also help you to become a more resilient and stronger person through difficult times.

What happens in counselling sessions?

Counselling is not about telling you what to do and forcing my opinion on you, rather it’s about exploring what you want, and me facilitating to get you there. Working on the things that matter to you most and helping you achieve your goals is key.

What if I am unsure whether I want to commit?

I always offer a free no commitment 15 min consultation first if unsure. This gives me an opportunity to find out what brings you into counselling and some of the deeper issues at hand. You will also get to know how I work with clients and my approach before you commit further. This is still a non-commitment stage. Only after this and if we feel comfortable working together, at that stage we can then discuss a suitable time for our next steps and the start of your counselling journey. The initial assessment is an opportunity for you to also see what I am like and if you feel comfortable with me.

Is everything in our session confidential?

Absolutely. There are some exceptions such as safeguarding. I write about this in more detail in my client contract that I will offer you after the initial assessment if you want to commit further. Once you feel satisfied with this and sign and send back, your support will begin mutually agreed between us.

Any brief notes, supervision notes and assessment forms are kept either digitally and/or in a lockable cabinet, where only I have access.

If I send anything to you via your email of choice, I will password protect the document so only you will have access.

How much does counselling cost?

The 15 min consultation is free. Further sessions are charged depending on service, all payable in advance. If you are a student, a keyworker, or someone on a limited income, please don’t let that deter you. Ask me about the discounts I can potentially offer you. These are however limited.

How long is each session?

All individual, youth and couple’s sessions, both initial assessment an ongoing counselling, are fixed for an agreed upon time for 50 minutes. Group work varies based on intervention from 1-2 hours to 2 full days!

How many sessions will I need?

This will depend on your own individual and unique needs and goals. It is difficult to answer this without the assessment as there is no minimum or maximum number of sessions. I have worked with people with all different goals. We will always review our work together to make sure you are achieving your targets and goals. Ultimately, you are in charge and decide whether you want to commit or not or many sessions you want.

What if I am unable to attend an appointment?

So long as you provide 48 hours’ notice before your appointment’s start time, you can book the same appointment for another date and session, once only, free of charge.  For cancellations with less than 48 hours’ notice of the appointment time, you will be charged half the normal session price.

Notice less than 24 hours from the start of the session is non-refundable regardless of the reason. Additionally, the counsellor is to give at least 48 notices to the client for any cancellations or changes to session times or change of day. In an emergency where a counsellor is unable to do so, this session would be mutually rearranged with the client

However, we can support all clients by phone or online too. If you are travelling by public transport, there is a bus stop right outside our practice.
